(Spoiler alert: Your children were never meant to become copies of you.)
Let’s be honest for a second…
When our children are little…
we spend a lot of time imagining who they’ll become.
“This one’s going to be an athlete.”
“She’s going to be a doctor.”
“He’s going to be the class clown.”
Then…
life smiles…
and reminds us…
our children have their own plans.
And honestly?
Thank goodness.
The world already has one of me.
It probably doesn’t need another one running around. 😂
🧠 Every Child Speaks a Different Language
One of the greatest lessons my children have taught me…
is that parenting isn’t one-size-fits-all.
What comforts one child…
might completely annoy another.
One child wants advice.
Another wants a hug.
Another wants you to stop talking altogether.
(Teenagers have perfected that last one. 🤣)
The mistake many of us make…
is trying to parent every child…
the exact same way.
Love stays the same.
The delivery changes.
❤️ Three Sons… Three Different Worlds
Having three boys has reminded me of this over and over again.
James…
has always carried a quiet steadiness about him.
He thinks deeply.
He notices more than he says.
Sometimes he doesn’t need me to solve anything.
He just needs to know I’m there.
Peeta…
walks through the world completely differently.
Creative.
Curious.
Always seeing life through his own lens.
With him…
I’ve learned that imagination isn’t something to outgrow.
It’s something to protect.
And then there’s Ken Jr.
Who somehow manages to turn an ordinary Tuesday…
into an adventure.
His joy is contagious.
His questions never seem to end.
And somehow…
his energy reminds me not to take life so seriously.
Three sons.
Three completely different personalities.
None of them needed a different mother.
They simply needed the same mother…
to love each of them differently.
🌱 Stop Comparing
Comparison is sneaky.
Sometimes we compare our children to other children.
Sometimes…
we compare them to their siblings.
“Why can’t you be more like…”
Please don’t.
Every child blooms on a different schedule.
Some speak early.
Some read early.
Some find themselves at sixteen.
Others at forty.
Growth isn’t a race.
It’s a journey.
And every child deserves the freedom…
to travel at their own pace.
🤲 Celebrate Who They Already Are
As parents…
we naturally want to help our children improve.
That’s part of the job.
But don’t become so focused on who they’re becoming…
that you forget to enjoy who they already are.
Laugh at the weird jokes.
Listen to the endless stories.
Watch the magic trick you’ve already seen twelve times.
Pretend the dinosaur facts are brand new.
Again.
😂
One day…
those moments become memories.
And you’ll wish for just one more terrible magic show.
💛 The Beautiful Surprise
One day…
without realizing it…
you’ll stop mourning the childhood you thought they’d have.
You’ll start smiling…
because the person standing in front of you…
is even more incredible than the one you imagined.
Not because they’re perfect.
Because they’re becoming themselves.
And what a privilege…
to witness another human being discover who they are.
💛 The Truth
Your child was never your greatest accomplishment.
They are their own person.
Your privilege…
was getting a front-row seat…
to part of their story.
Not writing every chapter.
Simply loving them…
while they wrote it.
🛠 Practice
This week…
forget grades.
Forget achievements.
Forget trophies.
Ask yourself…
“What is one thing I genuinely admire about my child’s character?”
Not what they do.
Who they are.
Then…
tell them.
You’d be amazed how often children hear corrections…
and how rarely they hear admiration.
💌 Letter I Never Sent
To the Person You’re Becoming
My sweet child,
There was a time when I wondered who you’d become.
Now…
I find myself simply enjoying the privilege of watching.
You don’t have to become who I imagined.
You don’t have to live my dreams.
Or fix my mistakes.
Or carry my expectations.
Your only job…
is to become the fullest version of yourself.
And mine…
is to keep cheering you on.
Whether your path looks anything like mine…
or nothing like it at all.
Because watching you become exactly who you were created to be…
has turned out to be one of the greatest joys of my life.
Love,
Mom ❤️
