HUMAN DISCERNMENT

by Yessica Jennings

Preface: You Are Not Late

Maybe you’re eighteen.

Maybe you’re thirty-eight.

Maybe you’re sixty-three.

Maybe you’re choosing what to study, raising children, working a job you need, rebuilding after a divorce, starting over, or living a perfectly respectable life while quietly wondering:

Is there more of me I haven’t met yet?

Good.

This guide is for you.

I believe every person carries beautiful potential.

Not necessarily fame.

Not necessarily wealth.

Something yours.

You don’t have to know what it is yet.

Life has a funny way of revealing the next piece when you’re capable of doing something with it.

So don’t rush.

But don’t sleep through your own life either.

Pay attention.

Try things.

Learn.

Change your mind.

Follow curiosity.

Protect your finite attention.

And don’t become so attached to one ending that you miss something better arriving through another door.

🎥 One More Thing Before We Start

At the end of every section, we’re going to visit someone who never existed.

A fictional character.

Why?

Because fiction doesn’t have to be factual to reveal something true about being human.

Think about sports.

Two teams can prepare, sacrifice, believe, and desperately want the same championship.

Both cannot win.

Someone prepared better. Someone played better that day. Someone adapted faster.

And sometimes life simply happened—a player got injured, a ball bounced differently, or someone produced the performance of their life at exactly the right moment.

Preparation matters.

Circumstances matter.

Chance matters.

And until that final whistle:

It’s not over until it’s over.

That’s a motto in my family.

I think it belongs here too.

Movies work similarly.

We’re usually shown one side of the game.

We know what the protagonist wants, so we root for them.

Are protagonists perfect?

Absolutely not. 😂

They’re every flavor of human imaginable.

That’s why we recognize ourselves in them.

So these characters aren’t here because they made every decision correctly.

They’re here because millions of real people watched imaginary humans struggle, fail, love, adapt, and keep going—and felt something real.

The character wasn’t real. What they awakened in us was.

Now let’s talk about yours.

You only get one movie.

Let’s make sure you’re actually in it.
