Because nobody should need a PhD to pay off a sandwich. 🥪
Still here? You’re a champion. 🏆
By now you’ve figured it out: it’s not your fault. You’re carrying too much. And while you can’t go back in time and undo the weight your ancestors dumped on you, you can stop passing those suffocating expectations down to your kids.
We’ve roasted 💍 Marriage.
We’ve roasted 🍼 Kids.
Now, put on your cap and gown—it’s time to roast 🎓 Education.
⸻
🎓 Education Then vs. Now
Back in the 1920s, a high school diploma could feed your 12 kids, buy a house, and leave you with change for a Coke. 🥤
Now it’s 2025, and the picture looks… slightly different:
•Want a PhD in Art History?
Congratulations—you just spent $120k to explain why Mona Lisa is smirking. 💁♀️
•Spent 7–10 years writing a dissertation nobody reads?
Cool, here’s your part-time adjunct job: $30k a year, no benefits. (McDonald’s pays more, and at least they throw in free fries.) 🍟
•Bonus: You’ll be 37, broke, and still driving the same 2008 Honda Civic you had in college. 🚗
Meanwhile, a 12-year-old on TikTok just made $4 million rating chicken nuggets. 🐔💰
So maybe, just maybe, it’s time to admit: the diploma isn’t the golden ticket it used to be.

Classic “Abuelita Software” — Education Edition 🎓
⸻
“College is the only path to success.” 🎓
•Translation: If you don’t get a degree, you’ll live under a bridge.
•The fear: That without a diploma, you’d starve. Back then, education really did equal survival.
•👵 Boomers: Went to school when tuition cost the price of a burrito. 🌯
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Took out loans bigger than mortgages—still paying them off while explaining to their kids why Disney is “too expensive.” 🏰
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “College? Nah. I’ll just start a podcast and sell hoodies.” 🎙️👕
⸻
“Without a degree, you’ll never get a good job.” 💼
•Translation: No paper = no paycheck.
•The fear: Poverty. Degrees were the golden gate to stability.
•👵 Boomers: “I got a job at 18, bought a house at 20, retired at 50.” 🙄
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: “I got three degrees and a side hustle, and I still can’t afford avocados.” 🥑
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Good job? I make memes for a living.” 😂
⸻
“Be a doctor or a lawyer—that’s the only way to make us proud.” ⚖️🩺
•Translation: Your dreams don’t matter—our bragging rights do.
•The fear: That respect only comes with “serious” professions.
•👵 Boomers: Wanted to brag at church potlucks. 🍲
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Wanted to be artists, ended up in law school anyway, now crying in their Lexus. 🚙😭
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Doctor? No thanks. I’m a professional gamer. Made more last month than your retirement fund.” 🎮💸
⸻
“Drop out? You’ll be a failure for life.” 🚫
•Translation: No diploma = shame forever.
•The fear: Ruin. They thought only degrees opened doors.
•👵 Boomers: Feared being the “town embarrassment.” 🏘️
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Dropped out, became baristas—with $50k debt. ☕
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Dropped out, started an app, sold it. Now I own the building where your college is.” 🏢💸
⸻
🌙 The Pattern Beneath It All
•School = survival.
•Diploma = pride.
•Higher Ed = bragging rights.
But in 2025? Sometimes that diploma is just a very expensive wall decoration. 🎓🖼️
⸻
🎓 Understanding Our Ancestors: Why the Pressure to Go to College
Back then, college was the magic key.
•In the 1950s–70s, tuition was cheap—like the cost of a burrito. 🌯
•One degree could lift a whole family into the middle class. 🏡
•Graduates got stable jobs, pensions, health insurance—luxuries unheard of before.
•Parents saw diplomas as proof their sacrifice was worth it. 👏
•Education was survival and upward mobility wrapped in one.
Generational call-outs:
•👵 Boomers: One degree fed a family. Still saying, “Just go to school, it worked for me.”
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Signed up for the “golden ticket” and got lifetime debt instead. 💳
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: Watching YouTubers buy houses at 19 while wondering if a $200k degree is worth it. 🏠😂
⸻
💎 The Break in the Chain
It’s 2025, not 1965. We can honor what education gave our grandparents and admit the system is broken now.
•A degree is not the only path to success. 🚫🎓
•Your worth is not tied to a diploma on the wall. 🖼️
•In today’s world, creativity, adaptability, and joy are worth more than a paper that comes stapled to $100k of debt.
•💎 New mantra: “Education is a tool, not a cage. Knowledge can come from school—or from life itself.”
⸻
🌙 Reflection Exercise: The Trash of Education Expectations 🎓
Take a pause. Journal honestly:
1.Which education script did you hear growing up?
(“College is the only path to success 🎓,” “Without a degree, you’ll never make it 💼,” “Be a doctor or lawyer ⚖️🩺.”)
2.How did it shape your path?
Did you go into debt? Pick a “safe” major instead of your passion? Drop out and carry shame?
3.Where do you feel the whispers now?
Do you still feel “less than” if you don’t have a degree—or guilty if yours didn’t “pay off”?
4.What truth do you want to pass forward?
(Example: “Success is not defined by degrees—it’s defined by peace, creativity, and joy.”)

One response to “Section Five: The Diploma Delusion – Guide 2”
OMG, Section Five hit me too, because I think that I am putting a heavy responsability to my daughter to be or achive what I can so far
I totally get that “college = only path to success” thing they meant well, but it’s kind of… outdated. Like, Boomers could grab a degree and chill with a pension, but Millennials and Gen Z? Ha! Half of us are hustling on side gigs or TikTok, and sometimes I feel like the diploma just sits on the wall as a very expensive piece of art. Education is a tool, not a cage like you say
