(aka⦠not everyone needs the directorās commentary to your life š)
Letās talk about somethingā¦
that used to terrify me.
Being misunderstood.
š
Not being wrong.
Not making mistakes.
Not failing.
Beingā¦
misunderstood.
Because those arenāt the same thing.
š§ Your Brain Thinks Misunderstanding Is Dangerous
When we were youngerā¦
being misunderstood could feel expensive.
Maybe people got mad.
Maybe they withdrew affection.
Maybe they judged us.
Maybe we spent years trying to explain ourselvesā¦
hoping that if we could just find the right wordsā¦
everyone would finally understand.
So nowā¦
every time someone misunderstands usā¦
our nervous system reacts likeā¦
šØ
āQuick! Explain yourself before everyone leaves!ā
š¤£
š¤ The Twelve-Page PowerPoint
Have you ever caught yourself preparing a speechā¦
that nobody asked for?
š
You know the one.
It starts withā¦
āSo let me explainā¦ā
Twenty-seven minutes laterā¦
youāre discussing something that happened in third gradeā¦
because obviously thatās important context.
š
Meanwhileā¦
the other person already decided how they feltā¦
five minutes ago.
Sometimesā¦
weāre not communicating.
Weāre auditioning for the role of
āMost Understandable Human of the Year.ā
Spoilerā¦
there isnāt an award.
ā¤ļø Hereās the Weird Truth
You can explain yourself perfectlyā¦
and someone can still disagree.
You can have good intentionsā¦
and someone can still misunderstand them.
You can make the healthiest decision of your lifeā¦
and someone else can call it selfish.
That doesnāt automatically make them wrong.
It doesnāt automatically make you wrong either.
It simply meansā¦
two people are looking through different windows.
š± Understanding Isnāt a Requirement
This one took me a while.
I used to thinkā¦
āIāll move forwardā¦
once everyone understands why.ā
š
That day never arrived.
Because every person filters your choices through:
their fearsā¦
their experiencesā¦
their expectationsā¦
their woundsā¦
their beliefsā¦
their own chapter of life.
Which meansā¦
some people will never fully understand your decisions.
Not because theyāre bad people.
Because theyāre reading a different book.
š Stop Carrying Everyoneās Opinion
Imagine walking through an airportā¦
carrying everyoneās suitcase.
š¤£
One belongs to your parents.
One belongs to your boss.
One belongs to your childhood.
One belongs to your neighborā¦
who somehow has very strong opinions about a life they arenāt living.
And somehowā¦
youāre surprised youāre exhausted.
Hereās a radical idea.
What ifā¦
you only carried your own luggage?
I know.
Wild concept.
š
šŖ You Can Love Peopleā¦
Without Letting Them Drive
This is where a lot of people get stuck.
They think boundaries mean rejection.
They donāt.
You can love someoneā¦
listen to someoneā¦
respect someoneā¦
pray for someoneā¦
wish them wellā¦
and still decideā¦
they donāt get to vote on your life.
Thatās not cruelty.
Thatās adulthood.
ā¤ļø
šŖ Some Doors Only Open From One Side
One of the hardest lessons Iāve learnedā¦
is that not every conversation ends with closure.
Some people wonāt understand.
Some wonāt agree.
Some will tell a completely different story about what happened.
And as frustrating as that isā¦
it isnāt always yours to fix.
Because peace doesnāt come from winning every misunderstanding.
Peace comes from knowingā¦
you donāt have to move back into a life youāve already outgrownā¦
just to make someone else more comfortable.
šæ Closing Reflection
Ask yourselfā¦
Who am I still trying to convinceā¦
ā¦that Iām allowed to live my own life?
Then ask an even better question.
What if I stopped trying to convince themā¦
ā¦and simply started living?
Because hereās the beautiful irony.
The people who truly love youā¦
may not understand every decision you make.
But they wonāt require youā¦
to become someone smallerā¦
just so they can feel more comfortable.
And the people who need you to shrinkā¦
were never asking you to be understood.
They were asking you to stay the same.
Thereās a difference.
