Because you can love someone without becoming their emotional punching bag.
Still with me? Good. Because here’s the hardest truth yet: sometimes the people we love most will never update their software.
They’re running on Abuelita 1950, where boundaries = betrayal, silence = strength, and guilt = love. And here we are in 2025, trying to play Minecraft on a Windows 95 computer. 💻⛏️
⸻
Classic “Abuelita Software” — Old World Edition 🕰️
⸻
“I’m your mother, you owe me.” 👵
•Translation: Lifetime contract, no refunds.
•The fear: That without obligation, parents would be abandoned. Survival once depended on kids repaying every sacrifice.
•👵 Boomers: Believed their children were retirement plans.
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Stuck in “sandwich mode”—raising kids while changing their parents’ diapers. 🥪
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Owe you? Lady, I didn’t even ask to be born.” 😂
⸻
“Family means putting up with everything.” 👨👩👧👦
•Translation: Blood = unlimited access, no matter how toxic.
•The fear: That leaving = dishonor. Families had to stay intact for survival.
•👵 Boomers: Endured narcissistic parents, but never dared to speak it.
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Going no-contact with abusive relatives—and feeling guilty about it.
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Family? My group chat is healthier than half my relatives.” 📱😂
⸻
“Respect me, even if I disrespect you.” 🚫
•Translation: I get away with anything because I’m older.
•The fear: That authority would collapse if children demanded equality.
•👵 Boomers: Took verbal and physical abuse as “discipline.”
•👩🦱 Millennials/Gen X: Learning to set boundaries at 40 with trembling voices.
•🧑🎤 Gen Z: “Respect is earned, even if you’ve got dentures.” 🦷🔥

😂 Signs You’re Loving Someone Stuck in the Old World 🕰️
1.You need a glass of wine 🍷 just to call them.
2.Their ringtone on your phone gives you anxiety attacks. 📱💀
3.Every “conversation” feels like a performance review—and you’re failing. 😬
4.They can turn “Nice weather today” into a guilt trip. 🌤️➡️😒
5.They say, “I sacrificed everything for you,” at least once per visit… sometimes before dessert. 🥧
6.You leave their house more exhausted than when you got there. 🛑
7.You rehearse boundaries in the car mirror like you’re about to audition for a Netflix drama. 🚗🎭
8.Your therapist knows their name by heart. 🛋️🖊️
9.They demand respect… but forgot how to spell it. 📚🙃
10.And yet, if anyone else talks bad about them, you turn into a guard dog. 🐕❤️

🌙 The Pattern Beneath It All
•Love = obligation.
•Respect = one-way street.
•Elders = untouchable.
But here’s the truth: love is not slavery. You can care for someone without losing yourself.
⸻
💎 The Break in the Chain
It’s 2025. We honor our elders, yes—but honoring doesn’t mean handing them our sanity.
•You can set boundaries with compassion. 🛡️
•You can love them and say “no” when they’re toxic.
•You can choose caregiving that doesn’t destroy your soul.
💎 New mantra: “I can love from a distance if up close costs me my peace.”
⸻
🌙 Reflection Exercise: The Trash of Old-World Love 🕰️
1.Which old-world script shows up most in your family?
(“You owe me 👵,” “Family means put up with everything 👨👩👧👦,” “Respect me no matter what 🚫.”)
2.Where have you sacrificed yourself for ‘obligation’?
Are you over-caretaking? Saying yes when you want to scream no?
3.What boundary can you set today to keep love intact without losing yourself?
(Example: “I can visit once a week, not daily.” “I’ll help with groceries, but not be the emotional punching bag.”)

🌹 Special Dedication
This section I dedicate to every daughter, son, or grandchild who loves an elder still trapped in the old world.
To Shelley—whose 80-something mother still throws daggers with her words, yet expects her to be nurse, maid, and savior.
To you, dear reader—if you’ve ever cried in the car after visiting your parents, if you’ve ever felt guilty for wanting space, if you’ve ever wondered, “Do I have to keep suffering just because I love them?”—this is your permission slip.
Love doesn’t mean losing yourself. Love means boundaries, compassion, and peace—sometimes from afar. 🕊️

One response to “Section Eight: Loving People Stuck in the Old World – Guide 2”
This special question hit me deeply
Where have you sacrificed yourself for ‘obligation’? I did and for someone that I love that already passed away, I am proud of myself for that but I sacrifice life oportunities, anyway I like this section
