(a.k.a. What People Mean When They Say “Your Nervous System”)
Let me start with a confession.
For a long time, every time someone said,
“It’s your nervous system,”
I internally rolled my eyes.
Hard. 🙄
Which is funny, because I’m a nurse.
I have a biology degree.
I know what neurons are.
I know sympathetic vs parasympathetic.
I passed the exams. I wore the scrubs. I paid the student loans. 😅
And still…
When people talked about “your nervous system,”
it sounded vague. Abstract. Trendy.
Like something people say when they’ve run out of actual explanations.
Kind of like:
👉 “Have you tried… drinking more water?” 💧
Turns out, your nervous system wasn’t vague.
It was just never explained in a way that applied to real life—
like when you’re crying in your car,
snapping at loved ones,
or lying in bed at 2 a.m. replaying a conversation from 2014.
So for the rest of this guide, when I say
“your body won’t let you chill,”
what I actually mean is:
👉 Your nervous system has taken over management.
And it did not consult you first. 😌
When most people hear nervous system, they think:
So when someone tells you:
👉 “Your nervous system is dysregulated,”
it can feel about as helpful as:
👉 “Have you tried… calming down?” 🙃
Which has never helped anyone.
Ever. In the history of humanity.
So let’s translate this into normal human language.
(No Textbook. No Flashcards.)
Your nervous system is not:
It’s the internal security system that decides how you respond to life
before your brain finishes forming a thought.
All day long, it’s asking one question:
👉 “Am I safe right now?”
That’s it.
That’s the entire job description.
Not:
Just:
👉 safe or not safe.
And once it answers that question, your body decides:
Before your brain finishes a sentence,
👉 your body already voted.
And it votes fast.
Like… no recount fast. 🗳️
This is where most people get stuck…
and start blaming themselves.
Most self-help assumes this order:
👉 Think → Feel → Act
Very cute. Very optimistic.
Rarely true.
Real life usually looks like this:
👉 Body senses danger → emotions spike → thoughts scramble to explain it → you ask, “Why am I like this?”
That’s why you can:
Your body does not care how smart, aware, or spiritually enlightened you are.
It only cares whether what you’re asking of yourself feels:
👉 survivable.
If it doesn’t, it will resist.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just enough to keep you stuck and frustrated.
If willpower worked…
you wouldn’t be here.
Let’s be honest—
you’re not lacking effort.
You’ve tried:
At some point, that stops working because your system is:
👉 tired.
Not lazy.
Not weak.
👉 Tired.
You cannot mindset your way out of a body that thinks it’s under attack.
No amount of motivation overrides biology.
Most healing advice focuses on software:
But your body is the:
👉 hardware. 💻
If the hardware is overheating, frozen, or glitching,
no software update is going to run smoothly.
That’s why people say:
👉 “I understand all of this… but my life hasn’t changed.”
It’s not because they didn’t try hard enough.
👉 It’s because no one checked the system underneath.
Instead of asking:
👉 “What’s wrong with me?”
Try asking:
👉 “What has my body been asked to tolerate for years?”
Eventually, your body taps out and says:
👉 “I’m done.”
And things start to fall apart.
Not because you’re failing—
👉 but because something finally needs attention.
Here’s the part nobody warns you about.
When your nervous system finally starts to regulate,
life can feel…
👉 boring.
No constant urgency.
No emotional spikes.
No inner monologues at 3 a.m.
Just… quiet.
And if you’re used to chaos, that quiet feels:
👉 suspicious.
Like:
No.
👉 Chaos feels exciting.
👉 Safety feels boring.
And boring?
👉 Boring is good. 😌
Boring means nothing inside you is actively on fire.
That’s not stagnation.
👉 That’s stability.
We’re starting here because nothing else works without this.
Not boundaries.
Not self-love.
Not healing.
Not alignment.
If your body doesn’t feel safe,
every good idea feels like:
👉 pressure.
This guide isn’t about forcing yourself to chill.
It’s about understanding why your body hasn’t been able to yet—
and how to change that without shame, force,
or another exhausting self-improvement phase.
If you’ve ever thought:
👉 “Why does this feel so hard when I know better?”
Congratulations.
👉 You’re about to understand why.
And no—
👉 you weren’t broken.
You were just running life on an:
👉 overloaded system. ⚡
